Stock Market Today – Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) IBM (IBM) McDonalds (MCD) and Wal-Mart (WMT) Report

(Best Syndication News) Stock markets in Asia were mixed today however they were mostly higher in Europe and America (see stock charts below). Traders were listening carefully to what lawmakers in Italy were saying Tuesday.

The Shanghai composite index (China) slipped slightly while the Nikkei 225 (Japan) fell more than one percent (see world market index chart below). The Hang Seng (Hong Kong) gained only slightly.

In Europe the FTSE 100 (England) was up 1.03 percent while the CAC 40 (France) and the DAX (Germany) were up 1.28 percent and 0.55 percent respectively.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi vowed to resign his post as prime minister if Parliament passes his proposed budget and austerity measures. This could happen as soon as next week.

Investors saw the resignation as a positive development and stock markets in the United States began to rally after a lackluster morning of declines. The Italian FTSE All Italy stock index jumped 93 points (+0.57%) today while the DJIA average was up 101.79 points (+0.84%) to 12,170.18.

Of the 30 Dow constituents, only three stocks were lower Tuesday (see Dow constituent chart below). Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ) was the Dow’s biggest loser, falling just 0.14 percent on the day. The trading volume was off by 40 percent.

In the after-hours the stock price gained one penny hitting $27.85 (6:12 pm EST). There was a bid of $27.62 for 200 shares and an ask of $27.93 for 400 shares.

The share price of International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) fell seven cents from Monday’s close. On Monday the stock closed at $187.32, but since they paid a 75 cent dividend, the adjusted close was $186.57.

In the after hours IBM was trading 34 cents lower to $186.91. IBM has been the Dow’s best performer on the year.

All of the S&P sectors were higher Tuesday (see S&P sector chart below). The financial sector added the most, up 1.93 percent on the day. The worst performer was the telecommunications sector, up just 0.32 percent.

The share price of McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD) slipped slightly, down 0.02 percent Tuesday. The stock was down just two cents during the trading day, but over the last 100-business day period MCD has gained 13.47 percent. Compare that to the Dow which was up only 0.50 percent over that same period.

The best performing Dow component was 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), up more than 2.5 percent on the day. The trading volume was down 25 below the average. The price was higher despite some legal issues reported on Monday.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT) was the second biggest gainer Tuesday. The stock was up over 2.3 percent on a volume 40 percent above average.

In the after-hours WMT continued to climb another 18 cents to $59.50.

Walmart is in the Dow consumer service sector (see sector charts below). The sector as a whole was up just 1.01 percent.
