alt text

(Best Syndication News) The dollar turned around against the Japanese yen later in the day while gold and crude oil declined (see forex and commodities charts below). Commodity currencies did well Monday while most commodities began to lose value.

World Economic News

The Australian Bureau of Statistics said that building approvals increased 8.4 percent in November. Economists had expected an increase of just six percent. Year on year, building permits were up 18.9 percent. The positive news was bullish on the Australian dollar.

China’s trade surplus grew to $16.5 billion in December, according to the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (CGAC). Economists had expected a surplus of just $8.7 billion.

The Federal Reserve said that consumer credit in the United States increased at an annual rate of 10 percent in November. Revolving credit increased only 8.5 percent while non-revolving credit increased 10.75 percent.

The British Retail Consortium reported that retail sales in the UK increased 2.2 percent in December compared to the previous year. Analysts had expected an increase of just 0.5 percent. In December of 2010 retail sales were down 1.5 percent.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (UK) said their December housing price index gained one point to settle at -16. Although the gauge means that the property market is under pressure, the number was better than the -19 expected by economists.
