alt text

(Best Syndication News) The financial sector took a beating Tuesday as traders favored technology and energy stocks (see stock market charts below). The volume of trading of Dow constituents was 15 percent below average.

Large Cap Stocks

Only 36 of the 160 constituent in our large-cap index were lower Tuesday (see the large cap stock chart below). Carnival plc (ADR) (NYSE:CUK) was the big loser, down more than 14 percent during the trading day.

The tragic wreck off the coast of Italy on Friday the 13th forced investors to re-evaluate their holdings in the company. The MS Costa Concordia ran aground near the shore of Isola del Giglio with 4,200 people on board.

Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) was the second biggest loser in our index. The stock fell more than 13 percent in one day but began to bounce back in the after-hours.

The trading volume of CCL was 10-times the average during Tuesday’s session. In the after-hours the share price jumped 20 cents to $29.80. There was a bid of $29.72 on 100 shares and an ask of $29.86 for 400 shares. The S&P consumer discretionary sector gained only 0.46 percent (see the sector chart below).

Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) slipped nearly four percent Tuesday. The stock began to gain in the after-hours, up 16 cents to $61.10 a share. Investors were not impressed with the company’s 2012 operating outlook.

The material sector as a whole gained 0.55 percent. Over the last week material stocks have performed the best (see the S&P sector chart below).

In the after-hours there was a wide range between the bid and asking prices for NEM.

Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) was another loser in our large-cap index. The stock was down more than two percent during the trading day. In the after-hours SNE declined another 11 cents to $16.66.

World Markets

Markets in Asia performed well after the government of China provided some positive economic news. Retail sales, industrial production and the gross domestic product beat analyst expectations.

The Shanghai composite index (China) added 4.11 percent while the Nikkei 225 (Japan) and the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) gained 1.05 percent and 3.24 percent respectively.

The rally continued throughout Europe. The FTSE 100 (England) gained 0.65 percent as the CAC 40 (France) and the DAX (Germany) gained 1.40 percent and 1.82 percent respectively.

Although the S&P TSX (Canada) and the IPC MMX (Mexico) indexes declined, all three major indexes in the United States advanced. The NASDAQ performed the best, up 0.64 percent. See the world index chart below for more information.
