Stock Market Today – Financial Stocks Swing Back like Gang-Busters

alt text

(Best Syndication News) Stocks continued to rally Wednesday as the financial sector led the way and utilities lagged (see the stock charts below). Better than expected earnings helped bolster confidence in banks.

Large-Cap Stocks

Only 22 stocks in our 160 constituent large-cap index were lower Wednesday (see the large cap index chart below). Texas Instruments Incorporated (NASDAQ:TXN) was the biggest index winner, gaining nearly nine percent during the trading day.

The volume of TXN was more than 200 percent above average. In the after-hours the share price fell two cents to $33.70. There was a bid of $33.71 and an ask of $34.00.

Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE:GS) was the second best performer in our large-cap index. GS gained nearly seven percent during the trading day and the stock continued to climb in the after-hours.

The S&P financial sector was the best performing sector Wednesday, up 1.67 percent (see the sector chart below). A better-than-expected earnings report from GS helped push many stocks in the sector higher.

The share price of Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) gained similarly to GS. The stock continued to move higher in the after-hours, up another five cents to $17.30. On Thursday, MS will hold their Q4 2011 earnings conference call at 10:00 am EST.

UBS AG (USA) (NYSE:UBS) was the fourth best performer in the large-cap index. MS upgraded UBS to overweight, sending the stock up more than five percent.

A gaggle of financial stocks led the market higher. The share price of Bank of America Corp (NYSE:BAC) gained nearly five percent. In the after-hours the stock added another eight cents to $6.81.

World Market Indexes

Markets in Asia were mixed on Wednesday (see world market chart below). The Shanghai composite index (China) slipped 1.33 percent while the Nikkei 225 (Japan) and the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) gained 0.99 percent and 0.30 percent respectively. Markets in India and Korea were lower; however the S&P ASX (Australia) and the TSEC (Taiwan) were both higher.

Exchanges in Europe were mostly higher after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced a plan to increase their lending resources. The CAC 40 (France) declined while the FTSE 100 (England) and the DAX (Germany) advanced.

Optimism spread to the United States as the three major indexes continued to climb throughout the day. The DJIA gained 0.78 percent while the S&P 500 and NASDAQ gained 1.11 percent and 1.53 percent respectively.

Markets in East Asia are opening higher again early Thursday.
