Stock Market Today – Materials and Utility Sectors were Losers

alt text

(Best Syndication News) Most sectors were higher Thursday with industrial and financial stocks paving the way for another up-day on Wall Street (see our stock charts below). A positive jobs report set the tone for traders as many tech companies reported earnings after the closing bell.

Widely Held Stocks

Only 30 of the 90 stocks in our widely held index were lower on Thursday (see the widely held stock chart below). eBay Inc (NASDAQ:EBAY) gained more than any other constituent, with the exception of Morgan Stanley.

EBAY gained nearly four percent during the trading day on more than double the average volume. Better-than-expected sales helped propel the stock higher in the after-hours as well. EBAY added another two cents to $31.53. There was a bid of $31.38 on 200 shares and an ask of $31.55 on 100 shares.

Staples, Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) was another widely-held winner. The share price was up more than three percent during the trading day; however the stock fell 20 cents in the after-hours hitting $15.75.

The energy sector stock, Schlumberger Limited. (NYSE:SLB), was another champion, up more than three percent. The S&P energy sector as a whole only gained 0.41 percent, as gasoline and crude oil prices dropped.

The share price of Xerox Corporation (NYSE:XRX) gained nearly three percent during the trading day. The stock fell six cents to $8.65 in the after-hours.

World Markets

Markets around the world were all higher Thursday, with only a few exceptions (see world market chart below). The Shanghai composite index (China) gained 1.31 percent while the Nikkei 225 (Japan) and the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) gained 1.04 percent and 1.30 percent respectively.

The only major loser was the S&P ASX 200 (Australia), which fell just 0.33 percent. Markets in Malaysia and Taiwan were closed.

The good news spread to Europe where all of the major indexes moved higher. Traders expect a agreement to be reached between Greece and its bondholders before more EU bailout money is extended. Traders hope to see something worked-out on Friday.

Markets in Europe were still higher despite the lingering Greek debt crisis. The FTSE 100 (Englan) gained 0.68 percent, while the CAC 40 (France) and the DAX (Germany) gained 1.96 and 0.97 percent respectively. Bond yields in Italy fell Thursday.

Most markets in the United States inched higher. The DJIA added 0.36 percent while the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ gained 0.49 percent and 0.67 percent respectively.

Early Friday markets in Asia are higher.
