Stock Market News – Nokia (NOK) Ford (F) Novo Nordisk (NVO) and Chevron (CVX) Report

alt text

(Best Syndication News) Stock markets in the United States were mixed Friday after a down-day in Europe (see stock charts below). The utility sector fell sharply as the financial and info-tech sectors provided modest gains.

Large Cap Losers

Half of the stocks in our large-cap index were higher on Friday (see the large cap stock below). Nokia Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:NOK) declined more than any other constituent, down nearly six percent during the trading day.

NOK posted their first annual loss; however they were able to beat analyst expectations. In the after-hours, NOK added value, up three cents to $5.11. There was a bid of $5.00 on 500 shares and an ask of $5.63 on 200 shares.

Another loser was Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F). The share price declined more than four percent during Friday’s session. The volume of trading was up 173 percent above average after a miss in operating earnings.

The consumer discretionary sector fell 0.22 percent Friday. The healthcare sector advanced 0.02 percent. The pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk A/S (ADR) (NYSE:NVO) was another loser, down nearly 2.47 percent Friday. The volume of trading was up 227 percent above average.

NVO was higher three straight-days, but news concerning their diabetes drug and the impending competition with Amylin Pharmaceuticals, may have put negative pressure on the stock. The share price is up nearly six percent over the last 30 business days.

Chevron Corporation (NYSE:CVX) was down nearly 2.5 percent on Friday. The energy sector as a whole was down only 0.41 percent. CVX was another large-cap constituent that missed the street’s earnings estimates.

World Markets

Most markets in Asia either closed higher Friday or were shuttered for the Spring Festival (see the world market chart below). The Nikkei 225 (Japan) slipped just 0.09 percent, while the Hang Seng closed up 0.31 percent.

There was no solution in the Greek bond-holder situation Friday. This drove stock prices in Europe lower. Traders were hoping for an agreement between the Greek government and sovereign-debt holders – but that didn’t happen.

The FTSE 100 (England) slipped 1.07 percent, while the CAC-40 (France) and the DAX (Germany) declined 1.32 percent and 0.43 percent respectively.
