Stock Market Today – Markets Mixed on European Debt Expectations

alt text

(Best Syndication News) Stock markets were mixed Monday after European worries continued to fester among traders (sees stock charts below). By the close of trading on Wall Street, the S&P 500 barely made it back into positive territory.

Large Cap Stocks

Of the 160 stocks in our large-cap index, 69 were lower (see large-cap stock below). Research In Motion Limited (USA) (NASDAQ:RIMM) was the worst large-cap performer, down more than eight percent during the trading day.

The change in management continued to push the stock down in the after-hours. The share price of RIMM fell another penny to $15.55. There was a bid of $15.55 on 100 shares and an ask of $15.73 on 400 shares.

Only four of the ten S&P sectors were higher Monday (see the sector chart below). The info-tech sector gained 0.38 percent while the energy sector gained the most. Healthcare was down 0.48 percent.

The share price of Amgen, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN) slipped more than two percent during Monday’s session. On Thursday the pharmaceutical company will release their Q4 earnings.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) slipped more than 2.5 percent but gained one penny in the after-hours to hit $186.10 a share. The Dow service sector as a whole fell 0.09 percent.

Today’s decline took away the gains that were made last week in the stock. The AMZN Q4 2011 earnings statement will be released on Tuesday next week.

The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) was another laggard in our large-cap index. The consumer goods company fell nearly two percent while the sector as a whole only declined 0.31 percent. There was a wide spread between the ask and bid prices in the after-hours as traders look for a bargain.

World Markets

Markets in Asia are opening higher Tuesday after a mixed or closed day Monday (see world market chart below). Markets in China were closed in celebration of the Chinese New Year; however, the Nikkei was down 0.01 percent.

The Hang Seng (Hong Kong) and the Shanghai composite (China) indexes were unchanged because the exchanges were closed. Markets in Korea, Taiwan, and Malaysia will remained closed on Tuesday. Some exchanges will be closed all week for the Spring Festival.

European markets were generally higher Monday. The FTSE 100 (England) gained 0.94 percent while the CAC 40 (France) and the DAX (Germany) gained 0.51 percent and 0.50 percent respectively.

Lack of progress at the EU finance meeting didn’t help confidence in the United States. Ministers were meeting to discuss the Greek sovereign debt crisis as U.S. markets opened. The three major indexes ascended early but declined later, only to ascend again before the close. The S&P 500 gained 0.05 percent while the NASDAQ and DJIA both fell 0.09 percent.
