Stock Market Today – Amazon (AMZN), BP (BP), McDonalds (MCD) and Newmont Mining (NEM) Report

(Best Syndication News) Traders kicked off the new month with a rally Wednesday, after encouraging manufacturing data is released in China (see the stock market charts below). Investors were also encouraged by the new Facebook IPO filing announcement and a possible Greek debt deal in the works.

Large Cap Stocks

Only 22 stocks in our large capitalization index were lower on Wednesday (see large cap index chart below). Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) was the big loser, as traders continued to digest the company’s earnings report and outlook. The trading volume was 7,000 percent above average.

The stock price rebounded only slightly in the after-hours, up 29 cents to $179.75. There was a bid of $179.10 on 100 shares and an ask of $179.75 on 300 shares. Just last Thursday AMZN jumped nearly three percent, while most other stocks were lower.

The AMZN loss in value was a standout in the index, however, the next worst performing stock was BP plc (ADR) (NYSE:BP), down only 0.78 percent. This decline comes on-the-heals of a four percent increase on Tuesday.

A judge told BP that they will need to cover some claims filed against Halliburton. There was also an internal memo leaked concerning the spill rate of last-year’s Gulf well disaster.

BP will report their Q4 earnings Tuesday, February 7th.

McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was another large-cap laggard. The share price slipped more than 0.65 percent Wednesday, but recovered slightly in the after-hours.

All of the Dow sectors were higher on Wednesday (see the sector chart below). The service sector gained just 0.79 percent, lagging far behind financials, industrials and basic materials.

Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) slipped nearly 0.60 percent during the trading day. In the after-hours NEM continued to fall another four cents to $61.08.

April COMEX gold prices hit 1749.5 a troy ounce Wednesday, up nearly nine dollars from Tuesday.

Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) was another laggard, down 0.47 percent. May 2012 light sweet crude oil (WTI) on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) fell to $97.61 a barrel. Since Wednesday’s settle, the price fell even more, down to $96.99.
