Stock Market Today – United Health Care (UNH) Eli Lilly (LLY) Kroger (KR) and Gilead Sciences (GILD) Report

alt text

(Best Syndication News) Stocks were higher Friday after the U.S. Department of Labor reported better-than-expected unemployment numbers (see the stock charts below). The DJIA has been lower seven of the last ten days.

The Labor Department said that the unemployment rate dipped to 8.3 percent in January. This was the lowest rate since February 2009. Traders had anticipated an 8.5 percent unemployment rate. Most stocks benefited from the good news.

Widely Held Stocks

Only eight of the 90 companies in our widely-held index were lower Friday (see the widely held stock index chart below). UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE:UNH) declined more than any other widely-held stock, down more than two percent during the session.

The volume of trading of UNH was up 40 percent above average. There was a bid of $51.30 for 100 shares and an ask of $51.43 on 1,300 shares in the after-hours.

Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE:LLY) was another laggard. The share price advanced Tuesday and Wednesday after a positive earnings report; however the stock was down both Thursday and Friday.

The health care sector as a whole struggled Friday (see the sector chart below). The S&P health care sector increased only 0.54 percent from Thursday. Compare that to the financial sector, which gained more than two percent.

The share price of The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) shrank, down five cents to $23.92. The stock was up five of the last 10 days. Consumer staples gained only 0.38 percent.

Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) was by far the biggest widely-held winner Friday after a positive earnings release.

World Markets

Nearly all of the markets throughout the world were higher Friday. The Athens Greece composite, the Nikkei 225 (Japan), the S&P ASX 200 (Australia), and the KOSPI (Korea) indexes were all lower (see the world market chart below).

The Shanghai (China) composite index added 0.81 percent and the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) gained just 0.08 percent. Both India stock exchanges were higher.

Markets in Europe were higher Friday despite lower than expected retail sales in the eurozone. The Eurostat said that the volume of retail trade in the euro area fell 0.4 percent in December compared to November. The good news is that EU27 retail sales grew by 0.3 percent.

The FTSE 100 (England) gained 1.81 percent, while the CAC 40 (France) and DAX (Germany) gained 1.52 percent and 1.67 percent respectively.
