Stock Market Today – PepsiCo (PEP) Research In Motion (RIMM) Cisco (CSCO) and News Corp (NWSA) Report

alt text

(Best Syndication News) Markets in Asia closed lower on Friday after a rally on Wall Street Thursday (see stock charts below). The FTSE 100 (England), the CAC 40 (France) and the DAX (Germany) are all opening lower early Friday.

Large-Cap Stocks

Only 78 of the 160 stocks in our large-cap index were lower Thursday (see the large-cap stock index chart below). PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE:PEP) dropped more than any other stock in the index, down nearly four percent during the trading day. Volume was up 400 percent above average.

The drop in price occurred despite a better-than-expected earnings report. A restructuring effort in 2012 is expected to reduce earnings before a rebound in 2013. There was a bid of $64.00 on 100 shares and an ask of $64.74 on 500 shares.

Research In Motion Limited (USA) (NASDAQ:RIMM) was the second-worst performer Thursday. The share price fell more than 3.5 percent on below average volume.

Disappointing guidance pushed the stock lower during the trading day, but in the after-hours the share price added four cents to $15.94. While RIMM dropped 3.5 percent, the S&P technology sector as a whole gained nearly one percent (see the sector chart below).

Barclays PLC (ADR) (NYSE:BCS) was another large-cap laggard, dropping nearly three percent during the trading day. The S&P financial sector fell 0.39 percent.

Another tech company, Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO), slipped more than two percent. The volume was 150 percent above average. CSCO beat second quarter analyst expectations but still declined during the trading day.

Cisco was higher or unchanged eight of the last ten days.

News Corp (NASDAQ:NWSA) declined more than two percent on Thursday. Like CSCO, NWSA beat analyst expectations but declined more than two percent. The stock was up five cents to $19.26 a share.

The company is still suffering from the hacking scandal fallout, but the great Q2 results prompted some to increase the NWSA price target.

World Markets

Markets in Asia were mostly higher on Thursday (see world market chart below). The Nikkei 225 (Japan) gained 1.10 percent, while the Shanghai composite index (China) and Hang Seng (Hong Kong) gained 2.36 percent and 1.54 percent respectively.

In Europe, the FTSE 100, the CAC 40, and the DAX were all slightly lower. The Athens composite index was higher.
