Stock Market News – Gilead (GILD) EOG Resources (EOG) Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) Southern Copper (SCCO) Report

(Best Syndication News) Stock markets are opening higher in Asia Monday as traders anticipate the approval of the Greek bailout package by Euro-Zone Ministers (see stock charts below). As the March 20 deadline approaches to prevent a Greek default, the bailout agreement, along with unpopular austerity measures in Greece, has been the stumbling block.

Traders had hoped for an agreement last week. While the Greek economy has been in shambles this last year, European Union members feared the sovereign-debt contagion could spread through to Portugal, Spain, and even Italy.

Large Cap Losers

Of the 160 stocks in our large-cap index, only 65 were lower on Friday (see the large-cap stock index chart below). Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) fell more than any other constituent in the index, down more than 14 percent.

Disappointing results in a hepatitis C study spurred the downturn in the stock Friday, and the share price continued to fall in the after-hours. GILD fell another two cents to $46.98 in the after-hours. There was a wide range between the bid and ask price for the $35 billion drug company.

The natural gas and oil exploration company, EOG Resources, Inc. (NYSE:EOG) was another large-cap laggard. The share price fell nearly three percent during the trading day.

In the after-hours EOG gained nearly 40 cents to $114.74 a share. The Dow oil and gas sector as a whole jumped 0.30 percent on Friday (see the sector charts below).

The share price of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (NYSE:FCX) fell nearly two percent Friday. In the after-hours, FCX gained seven cents to $43.11 a share.

Another mining company, Southern Copper Corporation (NYSE:SCCO), slipped nearly two percent. Like FCX, in the after-hours SCCO added value, up two cents to $32.19.

The S&P materials sector, which includes FCX and SCCO, was up just 0.17 percent. Health care, info-tech, and the utilities sectors all declined in value (see the S&P sector chart below).

Since the session close in New York, gold, silver, and copper are all higher on the COMEX.

Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE:NEM) was down nearly as much as SCCO and FCX. On Friday the share price fell more than 1.6 percent. All three stocks are receiving a optimistic boost that European leaders will work out a solution to their debt woes.
