Stock Market Today – Dell (DELL) Lowe’s Co (LOW) Dow Chemical (DOW) Medtronic (MDT) Ford (F) Report

(Best Syndication News) Markets are mixed in Asia on Thursday after a negative day on Wall Street Wednesday (see the stock charts below). The Shanghai (China) Composite and the Nikkei 225 (Japan) are higher while the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) closed lower. In Europe, the DAX (Germany) is lower; however the CAC 40 (France) and the FTSE 100 (England) are opening higher.

Markets in the United States were under pressure after the Fitch rating agency downgraded Greek debt. Traders began to move their holdings into government safe-havens and gold on Wednesday.

Some investors see the 14-times average forward earnings potential as fully subscribed. Given the earnings potential for many companies, the stock prices are pretty good and it could be time to take profits.

Widely Held Losers

About half of the stocks in our widely held index were higher Wednesday (see the widely held index chart below). Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL) was the second worst performing stock in our index, down nearly six percent during the trading day.

The share price suffered after a disappointing earnings statement Tuesday. The volume of trading was up 180 percent above average. In the after-hours, DELL added two cents to $17.17 a share. There was a bid of $17.05 on 2,000 shares and an ask of $17.17 for 7,300 shares.

DELL competitor, Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ), also provided disappointing earnings. Both HPQ and DELL have PE ratios below the S&P average of 16.42 (8.85 and 9.12 respectively).

Lowe's Companies, Inc. (NYSE:LOW) was another loser, down nearly three percent Wednesday. In the after-hours LOW gained four cents to $26.99. The company will release their Q4 earnings statement next Monday.

The Dow service sector, which includes LOW, fell 0.48 percent (see the sector chart below). Only two sectors, the oil and gas, and the utilities sectors advanced Wednesday.

The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW) slipped nearly three percent. The company received bad press concerning their connection to the 1984 Union Carbide Bhopal disaster, now that they are sponsoring the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. DOW acquired Union Carbide in 2001 and is receiving heat from the large Indian population living in London.

In the after-hours, DOW jumped eight cents to $33.75. There was a wide range between the bid and ask prices.

Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE:MDT) fell two percent during Wednesday’s session. This comes on the heels of a 2.38 percent decline on Tuesday, despite an in-line earnings statement.

MDT reaffirmed their 2012 EPS guidance and saw an increase in demand for their heart pacemaker.

The share price of Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) declined two percent Wednesday. The automaker announced they would add $3.8 billion to their pension obligations.
