Cocoa Epicatechin Flavonoid beneficial for Type 2 Diabetes and Advanced Heart Failure

(Best Syndication News) - A study from the UC San Diego School of Medicine and the VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) found improvements in mitochondrial structure with advanced heart failure and type 2 diabetes patients who consumed epicatechin-enriched cocoa for three months.

The initial research was with a small clinical trial, but now it is being tested in a larger clinical trial that has a placebo-control. The next study will test to see if epicatechin enriched cocoa will help heart failure and type 2 diabetes patients improve their ability to exercise.

The initial research study was published in the journal Clinical and Translational Science. It involved five participants that were considerably ill and had major damage to skeletal muscle mitochondria. The participants were given 100 mg worth of epicatechin in chocolate bars and a beverage daily for a three-month period. The researchers looked for differences in the mitochondria volume and abundance of cristae, before and after the 3 months. The cristae is an internal compartment of mitochondria that is important to help the mitochondria to function efficiently.

One of the Senior investigators, Francisco J. Villarreal, MD, PhD of UC San Diego's Department of Medicine's Division of Cardiology said that the cristae was seriously damaged in these participants, but after three months they saw the cristae numbers move toward a normal level.
