Stock Market News – Sara Lee (SLE) Motorola (MSI) EMC (EMC) Southwest (LUV) and IBM Report

stock market today

(Best Syndication News) Stock markets in Asia are opening the week lower as higher oil prices continue to worry traders (see stock charts below). Investors took profits on Monday after a run-up on Friday.

The Shanghai (China) composite index is down nearly 1.2 percent while the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) and Nikkei 225 (Japan) slipped 0.80 percent and 0.66 percent respectively. The S&P TSX (Taiwan) is down 0.63 percent and the S&P ASX 200 (Australia) index is down 0.24 percent.

Brent crude oil topped $125 a barrel earlier in the week setting in motion a series of concerns. Higher prices could increase the production costs in China and affect the cost of goods in the United States.

The high cost of oil compounded the lingering sovereign debt concerns in Europe. The FTSE 100 (England), the DAX (Germany), and the CAC 40 (France) are all lower. The victory of Vladimir Putin in Sunday’s elections helped bolster Russian stock prices.

Widely-Held Stocks

Only 34 of the 90 stocks in our widely-held index were higher on Friday (see the widely-held stock chart below). Sara Lee Corp. (NYSE:SLE) was the big winner, up more than seven percent in one day.

The volume was up nearly 400 percent above average after the company reaffirmed their guidance and announced the spin-off of their tea business.

Motorola Solutions Inc (NYSE:MSI) was another winner, up 1.70 percent during the session on below average volume. Investors liked the announced stock buy-back plan.

The S&P info-tech sector fell 0.19 percent on Friday; MSI is a component of that sector.

Another info-tech constituent, EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC), gained more than one percent during Friday’s session. EMC added another 13 cents to $28.45 in the after-hours. There was a bid of $21.46 on 200 shares and an ask of $34.00 on 100 shares.

The popularity and need for cloud computing has helped boost the appeal of EMC. A recent report found that the disc storage business should top $8 billion in 2012.

Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE:LUV) gained nearly one percent on average volume. In the after-hours LUV gained another four cents to $9.00 a share.

On Thursday LUV fell more than one percent as higher fuel prices become a concern again. After the drop in the share price, LUV became a more attractive investment.

International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM) gained 0.65 percent Friday. The stock is recovering after an announcement early last week that server sales were slumping. In the after-hours, IBM added six cents to $198.87.
