(Best Syndication News) Stock markets were mostly higher last week as positive employment numbers continued to buttress confidence (see the stock market charts below). The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) added 14 points on Friday while the NASDAQ and S&P 500 gained 19 points and five points respectively.

The unemployment rate was unchanged in February at 8.3 percent, according to the Department of Labor. Employment increased in several industries, including professional and businesses services, health care and social assistance, leisure and hospitality, manufacturing, and mining.

There were 12.8 million unemployed persons in the United States, 0.8 percent below the number unemployed in August 2011. The unemployment rate among adult men and women was only 7.7 percent, while teenagers experienced a 10.7 percent unemployment rate.

Large Cap Losers

Only 68 of the 160 stocks in our large-cap index were lower on Friday (see the large cap stock chart below). Statoil ASA(ADR) (NYSE:STO) slipped more than two percent during the trading day on below average volume.

The Norwegian energy company said last week that they support fracking legislation that could improve public opinion of the controversial method of drilling. They are also likely to sell their stake in an Iraqi oil field.

Low natural gas prices have put pressure on many energy companies over the last month. In the after-hours STO advanced eight cents to $28.10. There was a wide spread between the bids and asks.

UBS AG (USA) (NYSE:UBS) was another large-cap laggard, down more than two percent on average volume. A Fitch analyst downgrade last week hurt the stock price.

UBS was unchanged at $13.47 in the after-hours. There was a bid of $13.12 on 4,000 shares and an ask of $14.15 for 100 shares.

The share price of China Telecom Corporation Limited (ADR) (NYSE:CHA) fell more than two percent. CHA was higher Wednesday and Thursday before Friday’s plunge.

The S&P telecom sector hit a 100-day high Friday, up 0.49 percent in one day (see the sector charts below). While the energy sector lagged, the financial sector gained 0.79 percent.

Deutsche Bank AG (USA) (NYSE:DB) fell more than two percent during Friday’s session. This comes one day after a huge five percent increase on Thursday and a three percent increase on Wednesday.

As investors took their profits on Friday, the share price began to fall. In the after-hours the stock gained ten cents to $46.29. There was a bid of $42.99 on 200 shares and an ask of $46.74 on 300 shares.

The share price of Petroleo Brasileiro SA (ADR) (NYSE:PBR) slipped 2.07 percent during Friday’s session. The Brazil-based oil and gas company will release their first quarter earnings statement on Thursday.

Low natural gas prices have affected the energy sector as a whole. The commodity is down 37 percent over the last 100 business days. A glut of nat gas and lower demand has affected is the likely culprit.

In the after-hours PBR fell another six cents to $27.87.
