(Best Syndication News) Stock markets are mixed in Asia on Tuesday after slow-moving but upward day on Wall Street Monday (see the stock charts below). The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), the S&P 500, and the NASDAQ all climbed higher throughout the trading session.

Positive news from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) outweighed any negative reports. The tech company announced they were prepared to pay a dividend; the first since 1995. The mammoth company, now the largest in the world, pushed the S&P 500 higher as confident investors flocked to the stock.

Some of the optimism spilled-over into Asia Tuesday. The Shanghai (China) composite index and the Hang Seng index (Hong Kong) were lower; however the Nikkei 225 (Japan) is up 0.12 percent.

Early Tuesday the DAX (Germany), the CAC-40 (France), and the FTSE 100 (England) indexes are all lower.

Widely Held Stocks

Only 203 of the 486 stocks in our widely-held index were lower Monday (see the widely-held chart below). United States Steel Corporation (NYSE:X) was the biggest widely-held winner and has been higher five-straight days.

US Steel was up over six percent during the day’s session on double the average volume. In the after-hours X was up 15 cents to $31.79. There was a bid of $31.59 on 500 shares and an ask of $34.45 on 200 shares.

AK Steel Holding Corporation (NYSE:AKS) was another winner, up nearly five percent during the session on double the average volume. The share price of AKS and X shot-up despite flat steel prices this month.

Hot-Rolled Coil Steel Index Futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) have been $690 a ton for 10-straight days. That is down from $728 last month.

The S&P material sector was 0.49 percent higher Monday (see the sector chart below). Over the last 30-days, materials are off by 0.80 percent.

The energy company QEP Resources Inc (NYSE:QEP) gained more than three percent Monday. Light sweet crude oil on the NYMEX was up to $108.09 a barrel. The energy sector as a whole has benefited from higher WTI and Brent crude oil prices. The S&P energy sector has gained 2.15 percent on the week.

Higher oil prices didn’t put a crimp in shares of United Parcel Service, Inc. (NYSE:UPS). UPS was up more than three percent during Monday’s session. The announced purchase of a European delivery company boosted investor confidence, pushing the UPS volume of trading up 280 percent above average.

In the after-hours UPS gained another 29 cents to $81.40.
