7.1 Magnitude Earthquake shakes in Chile Today

(Best Syndication News) - A large 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook near Maule, Chile today. The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the event as moderate to heavy for potential damage and the shaking as very strong to severe. The earthquake occurred on Sunday, March 25, 2012 at 06:37:06 PM local time for the event. At first, the event was recorded at a 7.2 magnitude, but was later downgraded by the USGS to a 7.1 magnitude event.

The earthquake epicenter was located 16 miles north-northwest of the event in Talca, Maule, Chile. The city of Curico was 34 miles away, and the city of Cauquenes was 61 miles from the earthquake's epicenter. The city of Santiago was 136 miles from the earthquake.

The USGS reported the exact location of the event at 35.198°S, 71.783°W, with a depth of 18.6 miles.

The earthquake was located on the coast of Chile. With this magnitude earthquake it is common for sizable aftershocks over 5.0 or higher magnitude to occur.
