Stock Market News – Micron (MU) NIKE (NKE) DELL (DELL) and SanDisk (SNDK) Report

(Best Syndication News) Stock markets are opening mixed in Asia Monday after an up-day in the United States Friday (see the stock charts below).

The Nikkei 225 (Japan) is 0.18 percent higher while the Shanghai composite (China) and the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) are down 0.24 percent and 0.04 percent respectively. Slower than expected manufacturing growth in China has raised concerns both domestically and in markets that supply the raw materials.

Many commodities had been lower, however on Friday gold, oil, and silver prices all advanced. April gold futures on the COMEX climbed nearly twenty dollars (1.21%) to $1,662.40 an ounce while May crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) gained $1.50 (+1.44%) to $106.87 a barrel. Brent crude oil was up nearly two dollars (+1.62%) to $125.13 a barrel.

Higher oil prices have been a concern and could derail the economic recovery in the United States. Crude oil has been higher after some economic signals pointed in the positive direction.

Initial jobless claims declined again and economists expect orders for durable goods for February to increase three percent. The Commerce Department will release their durable-goods data on Wednesday.

Widely-Held Stocks

Of the 487 stocks in our widely-held index, only 158 were lower on Friday (see widely-held stock chart below). Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) was the big loser, down nearly four percent during the session. The volume of trading was up 57 percent above average.

MU was down two straight days after company reported less-than-expected earnings. In the after-hours MU fell another two cents to $8.38. There was a bid of $8.25 on 1,000 shares and an ask of $8.43 for 1,500 shares.

NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE) was the second-worst performer in the index. The stock fell more than three percent during Friday’s session after the footwear company reported below-par earnings on Thursday. The volume was nearly triple the average as inventories grew and profits sagged.

The S&P consumer discretionary and consumer staple sectors were both up 0.12 percent.

The Info-tech sector fell 0.02 percent as Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL) slipped more than three percent. The volume of trading was sixty percent above average. In the after-hours DELL fell another penny to $16.48. The increase in the use of cloud services could put a crimp in DELL and HP server sales.

In the after-hours there was a bid of $16.01 on 300 shares and an ask of $18.18 on 1,000 shares. DELL is down nearly five percent over the last week.

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) slipped nearly three percent on Friday. After an increase of 2.66 percent on Wednesday, SNDK declined in value on Thursday and Friday. The volume was up 70 percent above average on the last trading day.

A slip in the price of NAND flash chips prompted concerns for SNDK and MU. In the after-hours SNDK fell another seven cents to $49.33. There was a bid of $48.50 on 100 shares and an ask of $49.50 on 400 shares.
