Stock Market News – Constellation Brands (STZ) and CarMax (KMX) Widely-held Losers

(Best Syndication News) Stock markets in Asia are opening lower Monday after a series of negative economic news weighed heavily on investor concerns (see stock charts below). The Chinese government missed their four percent inflation target as consumer prices increased 3.6 percent last quarter (year-on-year).

The Shanghai (China) composite index is down 0.23 percent to 2,301 while the Nikkei 225 (Japan) and Hang Seng (Hong Kong) indexes are down 1.07 percent and 0.95 percent respectively.

Friday’s jobs report was a disappointment. Although the unemployment rate fell from 8.3 percent in February to 8.2 percent in March, economists had expected a stronger payroll number. There were only 120,000 jobs created in the month, while expectations called for between 200K and 230K jobs.

The poor performance spooked investors, driving capital markets into U.S. government bonds and notes. The U.S. Treasury Department said the 10-year note yield fell 12 basis points to 2.07 percent on Friday.

Initially gold prices began to fall after the settle Thursday, but later June gold on the COMEX advanced $11.60 to $1,641.70 a troy ounce. Crude oil futures weren’t as fortunate. Light sweet crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) slipped $1.19 to $102.12 a barrel (May delivery).

Only 185 constituents of the 485 stocks in our widely-held index were higher on Thursday (see the widely-held stock chart below). Constellation Brands, Inc. (NYSE:STZ) suffered the most, dropping more than 12 percent during the trading day. The volume was nearly 800 percent above average.

STZ beat analyst expectations of 39 cents a share with earnings of 69 cents, but the negative outlook pushed the market cap down to near $4.31 billion. In the after-hours STZ fell another 36 cents to $21.25. There was a bid of $19.22 on 200 shares and an ask of $21.70 on 1,000 shares.

CarMax, Inc (NYSE:KMX) was another loser in our index. The share price fell nearly five percent during the trading day. The volume was 160 percent above average.

The share price of KMX slipped despite beating estimates. Analysts were looking for 40 cents per share, but the actual number came in at 41 cents. The car dealer’s stock continued to slide in the after-hours, falling eight cents to $33.15.
