(Best Syndication News) - The US Department of Agriculture confirmed a new case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also known as mad cow disease that came from a dairy farm in Central California near the city of Hanford.

The USDA discovered the infected cow at a rendering facility in California during a routine inspection. The cow was reported to not have shown any symptoms of stumbling before slaughter. The cow tested positive for atypical BSE, which is not usually caused by contaminated animal feed.

The USDA said that the cow was not introduced into the food supply and would not be of any danger to humans. Additionally, they said the mad cow disease would not spread through milk.

The USDA has banned the distribution of brain and spinal materials of the cow into the food supply. Additionally, a ban is in place for cows that are unable to walk to slaughter are not allowed in the human food supply. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also have a ban for feeding ruminant material to cattle.

The USDA said that the mad cow disease cases have reduced 99 percent. In 2011, there were only 29 cases of mad cow disease worldwide compared to 37,311 cases in 1992.

California Department of Health’s Director and Public Health Officer, Dr. Ron Chapman said, “There is no public health threat due to the discovery of BSE in a dairy cow. The food supply in California has not been affected by this discovery, and residents do not need to take any specific precautions. The California Department of Food and Agriculture has many procedures in place to keep this disease from entering the food chain, and the detection found is evidence that the system of safeguards is working. The cow in question was not slaughtered for food and BSE is not transmitted in milk.”
