Mind Crib Tent Recall announced for Entrapment and Strangulation Danger

Portable Play Yard Tent being recalled - CPSC

(Best Syndication News) - The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that five retailers are announcing a voluntary recall of around 330,000 Mind Crib Tents because they could strangle or entrap a toddler. The tents cover playpens and cribs. Tots in Mind, Inc. made them, but are no longer in business.

One child died from the tent failing, and another child suffered a serious injury. Between January 1997 and April 2012, the CPSC is aware of 27 tent failures. A two-year old boy died after he was trapped between the top of the rail of a playpen and the bottom of the Mind Crib Tent. This death was reported in a previous recall that was issued in July 15, 2010. In 2007, another two-year old boy suffered catastrophic brain injury when the crib tent became inverted and the rod trapped him at the neck.

There are several models involved. The recall includes the Portable Playard Tent, the Original Cozy Crib Tent, the Cozy Crib Tent II, the Crib Tent for Convertible Cribs, and the Portable Playard Tent Plus Cabana Kit. There is a label sewn in fabric label measuring 2”x 1½” that says “Tots In Mind” and the company's logo. The label is found near the top of the tent.

The company, Tots in Mind, Inc. is no longer in business. When they were in business, the company offered a repair kit, but since the business is no longer, the kit is not available. Five retailers who sold the Mind Crib Tents are offering a voluntary recall of the products.

The product was sold at many retailers including Bed Bath & Beyond, Buy Buy Baby, Burlington Coat Factory, Toys R Us/Babies R Us, Walmart. They also were sold online on websites such as Amazon.com at a price between $60 and $85.

Consumers who have the Mind Crib Tent covers should contact the store that they purchased it from to receive either a refund or a store credit. They should stop using the product. The CPSC said that if the consumer is not sure where it was purchased that they should look at the return policy for the retailers to see their terms.
