Cyrofreeze and Arctic Zone ice gel pack recall - CPSC

(Best Syndication News) - The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that California Innovations is voluntarily recalling certain Cyrofreeze and Arctic Zone branded freezer gel packs. The liquid could leak out on food, and if consumed in large quantities, it could make a person ill.

Various configurations of the gel packs were sold at retailers nationwide between July 2007 and December 2008. This includes mass merchandisers, warehouse stores, distributors, and online sellers. The price of the products ranged between $5 and $28 depending on the package.

This is an expanded recall from a previous announcement made by California Innovations back in January 2012. This recall involved around 248,000 units that came with lunch boxes, and 55,000 that were with food carriers. Today’s recall involves around 880,000 ice packs.

The packs could leak out diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, and if consumed in large amounts a person could become ill. The company has not received any reports of illness.

The Cryofreeze ice/hot packs and Arctic Zone ice packs are involved in the recall. The Cyrofreeze product can be used to keep food hot or cold. The Arctic Zone is used to keep the food cold. There are six different products that are being recalled.

It measured 7.85 inches by 5.5 inches. There was another 3-cell pack that had square-shaped pouches filled with blue gel and measures 7.6 inches by 3 inches. The third style comes in a 2-cell pack with two square pouches filled with blue gel and measures 5 inches by 3 inches.

Arctic Zone ice pack

The Arctic Zone ice pack has an opaque blue wrapper and measures 6.25 by 4 inches. On the package is the Arctic Zone logo along with a picture of an iceberg. On the front of the package, the words “ICE,” “Personal Ice Pack” and “Non-Toxic Leak Proof Gel” appear.

Consumers who have the recalled ice packs should stop using them. The ice packs need to be disposed of safely according to local, state, and federal regulations. Consumers can contact a local waste disposal authority on how to properly dispose of the ice packs.

California Innovations is offering a $6 cash refund for large 8.5 x 8 inch Cyrofreeze gel packs, and $5 cash refund for all other gel packs.
