County to Move Date Palm Trees in Mentone for Intersection Improvement

Map of Mentone California

(Best Syndication News) Residents of Mentone will need to make a detour to avoid the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Walnut Street. County officials say Fifth Avenue will be widened and a left-turn pocket will be added for traffic turning from Fifth to Walnut.

Workers will also install gutters and a curb. Fences will be moved and other upgrades will be made to improve water-flow and irrigation.

The County Public Works Department will help residents gain access to adjacent properties. All emergency vehicles will be able to access the area at all times while regular traffic will be routed around the construction.

Roni M. Edis, a Staff Analyst for San Bernardino County, tells Best Syndication that 10 existing Canary Island Date Palm trees will be relocated approximately 20 feet south of their current location. They will be spaced about 50 feet apart.

Eastbound traffic on Fifth Avenue will be detoured north to Wabash Avenue, east on Citrus, and then south onto Crafton Avenue to Fifth Street. Westbound traffic will be detoured onto Crafton Avenue and then west on Citrus and south on Wabash to Fifth.

The County Board of Supervisors approved the project, which will be funded by proposition 1B funds. A Riverside company, STI Inc., will do the construction for $1,026,309. Although the project will begin this month, it will not be completed until December.
