Vaccine for Obesity investigated in Mice Study

(Best Syndication News) - A study investigated the effectiveness of JH17 and JH18 vaccines to see if mice fed a high-fat diet could shed weight. The mice that were given the vaccinations lost and maintained a 10 percent body weight reduction. The results of the study were published in open access edition of the BioMed Central’s Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology.

Somatostatin is a peptide hormone that can hold back the activity of the growth hormone and the insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1). By slowing these processes down, the body’s metabolism can increase and therefore could cause weight loss.

Keith Haffer, from Braasch Biotech LLC, tested the vaccines on two groups of male mice. There was one group of ten mice that were the control group. They were given a saline injection. Before being put on through the study, all the mice were fed a high fat diet for eight weeks and were fed this same diet for the rest of the study which lasted six weeks. The vaccines were given at the beginning of the study, and again for a second time on the 22nd day.

The researchers noticed that the mice that had the somatostatin injection lost 10 percent of their body weight after four days. Both of the vaccines created antibodies to the somatostatin. The vaccinated mice kept the 10 percent reduction in body weight. However, the growth hormone IGF-1, or insulin levels remained at normal levels.

More research would need to be conducted over a longer duration to see if this is a viable solution for treating obesity. Additionally, it has not been tested on humans; therefore, much more research would be needed.
