San Bernardino County Calls for Water Conservation and Infrastructure Projects

(Best Syndication News) There will be enough water in San Bernardino County if residents step-up their conservation efforts, according to the local public officials. A new study by the county said our water needs can be taken care of through 2035.

The conclusion of the first-ever report was presented at the Sixth Annual San Bernardino County Water Conference in Ontario. In June 2011 the county board of supervisors adopted the Countywide Vision Statement that called for a complete inventory of water.

Water is an important issue in the high desert. “This is the year of we,” said Kirby Brill, general manager of the Mojave Water Agency and a member of the Vision Water Element Group. "There will be much more of an emphasis on working together in the context of the Countywide Vision. ... Silos are being destroyed."

The good news is that we will have enough water to meet the current and projected demand, according to David Wert, a spokesperson for the county. The bad news is that we will just “barely” meet the demand through 2035.

County Board of Supervisors Chair Josie Gonzales and Vice-Chairman Brad Mitzelfelt co-hosted the conference in Ontario. First District supervisor Mitzelfelt, whose district includes the high desert, stressed the importance of conservation but also the importance of new infrastructure projects.

"We will have enough only if all things come together - investment and behavior modification," said Celeste Cantu', general manger of the Santa Ana Watershed Project Authority and another member of the Vision Water Element Group.
