Breeder's Choice AvoDerm Natural Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Adult Dog Formula recall announced - FDA

(Best Syndication News) - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the voluntary recall of one batch of Breeder's Choice AvoDerm Natural Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Adult Dog Formula because it could potentially be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recalled dog food was shipped to distribution centers and retail locations in California, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, Virginia, and Washington.

Only the 26 pound packages of the Breeder's Choice AvoDerm Natural Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Adult Dog Formula with the “Best Before” dates of “28 Aug 2013,” “29 Aug 2013,” and “30 Aug 2013” are involved in this recall. The product code is “1000065074” and the UPC barcode number is “0 5290702043 8.” No other products from this company are involved in the recall.

There have been no reports of Salmonella infecting dogs or humans in association with this recall. Dogs can become ill from eating the dog food. However, humans are at risk of becoming infected by handling the contaminated dog food. When handling the dog food, the pet owner should wash their hands thoroughly and should clean any dog bowls and surfaces that the food may have touched. An infected dog can also transmit the infection to humans. The infected pet may appear otherwise healthy.

Humans that may have been infected with Salmonella may have symptoms of diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, nausea, and fever. The infection in rare cases could develop into a more serious one requiring medical care. Dogs that have been infected with Salmonella typically have symptoms of lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. A veterinarian should be contacted if these symptoms appear.

A letter with instructions will be given out to all of Breeder’s Choice Pet Food customers. Consumers who have the recalled dog food are asked to contact the Breeder’s Choice Customer service toll-free at 1-866-500-6286 for questions and concerns for dogs that may have eaten the product. More information will also be posted at the company’s website at http://www.avoderm.com/.
