Cantaloupe recall announced for possible Salmonella

DFI Marketing Inc. Voluntarily Recall announced for 28000 cases of cantaloupes - FDA

(Best Syndication News) - The US Food and Drug Administration announced the voluntary recall of cantaloupes that were distributed by DFI Marketing Inc. out of Fresno, California. A single sample of cantaloupe tested positive for Salmonella.

No illnesses have been reported. Out of a concern for safety, the company is recalling certain cantaloupes that were shipped to Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Mexico.

The cantaloupes were shipped between August 27 and September 10, 2012. The melons were packed on August 26, 2012. The company believes that the cantaloupe is most likely not on store shelves, but consumers may have them in their homes.

Around 28,000 cartons are involved in this recall. They were shipped in bulk packs of 6, 9, 12, 15, or 18 cantaloupes per carton. The cantaloupes came packed in a DFI branded carton. On the carton there is a “826 California Westside” stamped in black.

Typical symptoms of a Salmonella infection includes stomach pain, fever, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Most healthy people will recover from this infection. However, the very young, the very old, and those with a compromised immune system can be at an increased risk for developing a serious and sometimes fatal infection. If the infection spreads to the bloodstream, the person can be at risk for arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

Consumers should not eat the recalled cantaloupes. They can take the product back to the place of purchase for a refund if it is involved in the recall. Consumers can also contact DFI Marketing Inc., with questions at 1-559-449-0244 at any time.
