County Makes Improvements to the Calico Ghost Town

Calico Ghost Town

(Best Syndication News) The Calico Ghost Town will receive a much needed facelift along with new restrooms and a shower at the campground. Visitors can also expect to see improvements to the Lucy Bell Lane house and the Calico Mining Museum.

The Lane house is still open while workers make the much-needed renovations. Last weekend, First District County Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt was on-hand to participate in the grand opening of the Calico Mining Museum in the Zenda Building.

Calico Days, celebrated between October 5th and 7th this year, marked the museum’s grand opening. The Mining museum will feature exhibits on mining history and technology. Visitors will be able to experience the day-to-day living conditions of the early residents.

Lucy Bell Lane was one of those early residents. She grew up in the town, operated the general store, and lived in Calico until her death in 1967 at the age of 93. The town has a rich history dating back to the 1800s.

Supervisor Mitzelfelt commemorated the opening of the Museum. “Calico Ghost Town is already the most popular attraction in our regional park system and new restrooms are an investment that will ensure the facilities are top notch and will keep visitors coming from around the country and from around the world,” the supervisor said.

“It’s one of many improvements in the works that will bring Calico up to its full potential and bring in even more visitors and revenue.”

Crown Contracting, Inc, of Yucca Valley received the 651,810 contract to demolish the two restrooms and a shower. The campground was built back in the 1980s and was due for a facelift. This project should be completed by spring 2013 and cost around $830,000.

Mitzelfelt also provided $75,000 from his discretionary funds to improve the Lane House and museum.
