Raw Sliced Carrot Chips recalled for possible Salmonella

Bolthouse Farms Sliced Raw Carrot Chips - CDPH

(Best Syndication News) - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced the voluntary recall of around 5,600 cases of the 16-ounce carrot bags that were shipped from Bolthouse Farms of Bakersfield, California, throughout the United States and Canada.

The recall was announced after a random sample from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services identified carrots with salmonella. So far, no illnesses have been reported.

The produce was packed with the names of Bolthouse Farms Carrot Chips, Safeway Farms Carrot Chips, or Farm Stand Carrot Chips on the bag. The 16-ounce bags of carrot chips have a “Best If Used By” dates of November 12 and November 13, 2012.

There is a code of either 04T XXXX BF212J11 or 04T XXXX BF212J12 printed on the front right corner of the bags; the ‘X’ represents different numbers and times they were packed. No other Bolthouse Farms produce are being recalled.

The Safeway stores that received the recalled Safeway Farms branded carrot chips were in Ketchikan, Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho; Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington State. Carrs stores in Juneau, Alaska; Pak ‘N Save stores in California; Randalls stores in Texas and Tom Thumb stores in Texas may have received the products.

Consumers who have the recalled carrot slices should not eat them. Instead, they should either throw them out or return them to the store of purchase for a refund.

A salmonella infection can cause symptoms of diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Most healthy individuals will recover after about one week. Sometimes the infection can spread and become serious. The infection can become serious in people with a weak immune system, the very young, and the elderly. People with a salmonella infection should seek medical attention.
