Samsung and LG receive Awards for Most Efficient HDTV Sets

Samsung 26EH4000 wins SEAD Global Efficiency Medal

(Best Syndication News) - Samsung and LG HDTV sets have been recognized for being the most energy efficient units currently on the market. The Super-efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) awarded the first-ever SEAD Global Efficiency Medal to Samsung and LG for some of their HDTV sets.

SEAD is an initiative to encourage governments and the private sector to develop and deploy energy efficient products. On their website, SEAD states that they were first introduced at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change - a December 2009 conference held in Copenhagen - by U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu and Indian Environmental Minister Jairam Ramesh.

This is the first time that energy efficient awards were announced for flat-panel television sets in the world. SEAD said that the awards are for three different size categories. One television set received an award for being the most energy efficient while using an emerging technology, even though it is not yet on the market.

The commercially available HDTV set winners used 33 to 44 percent less energy than TV sets with comparable technology. The emerging technology HDTV set winner was 59 percent more energy efficient than comparable models currently on the market.

Peter Bennich of the Swedish Energy Agency said that over the last few years there have been drastic improvements in the energy efficiency of the television sets.

Consumers benefit from energy efficient models; they save on the electric bill. Three to four percent of worldwide residential electricity consumption is from television usage. If all HDTV sets were as energy efficient as the SEAD award winning sets, the potential energy savings could total over 84 billion kilowatt-hours every year.

Samsung won the award for TVs measuring less than 29-inches. The Samsung UN26EH4000F model is a 26-inch 720p 60Hz LED-LCD HDTV.

In the medium sized HDTV category (between 29-inch and 42-inch), Samsung had two models that tied for first place: the UE40EH5000W and UN40EH5000F. Both HDTV sets are 40-inch HDTV sets.

The 42-inch and larger category winner went to LG for their 47LM670S, which is a 47-inch HDTV set.

The winner for the emerging technology category went to the LG 47-inch backlit LCD prototype. This TV set will be on the market sometime in the next two years.

Regional winners for North America were the Samsung UN26EH4000F (under 29-inches), Samsung UN40EH5000F (between 29-inch and 42-inch), and the LG 47LM6700 (over 42-inches).
