(Best Syndication News) - While many Americans opted to go shopping at traditional brick-and-mortar stores last week, the number of people shopping online during Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday is increasing. U.S. retail e-commerce spending for the first 23 days of November totaled $13.7 billion, according to report by comScore (NASDAQ:SCOR). The National Retail Federation also found a trend in online shopping during this holiday weekend.

On Black Friday, online shoppers spent 1.042 billion, comScore found. This was a 26 percent increase in spending compared to Black Friday 2011. Online Thanksgiving Day sales increased 26 percent compared to the previous year's figures. Put side-by-side, online Thanksgiving Day sales totaled only $633 million, much smaller than Black Friday sales.

The most popular stops for shoppers were Amazon, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target, and Apple. However, comScore excluded online auction websites such as eBay.

ComScore said the top gainers from 2011 to 2012 were Digital Content & Subscriptions, with a gain of 29%. Toy sales were up 27%, Consumer Packaged Goods increased 23%, Video Game Consoles & Accessories were up 18%, and Consumer Electronics gained 18 percent.

Overall, shoppers turned out in record numbers for the holiday shopping. According to a survey from the National Retail Federation (NFR), a record 247 million people made a trek out to stores and visited websites over the Black Friday weekend. In 2011, the federation estimates there were 226 million shoppers.

NFR said that average spending was $423, compared to last year at $398. The average shopper spent $172.42 online over the weekend, which was around 40.7 percent of their expenditure. That percentage was up this year; in 2011 only 37.8 percent of the money was spent online. Overall, shoppers in 2012 spent $59.1 billion during the weekend.
