Scientist identify More Genetic causes of Coronary Artery Disease

Blood pressure check - BSN

(Best Syndication News) - A large group of international scientists, including scientists from Standford University School of Medicine, has identified 15 new genetic areas that are related to coronary artery disease. With these new findings, there are now 46 genetic links related to heart disease. The research findings will be published in the December 2 online edition of Nature Genetics.

Coronary atherosclerosis, another name for plaque build-up in the artery wall of the heart vessels, is a condition that can cause a person to suffer chest pain or a heart attack. According the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, heart disease ranks as the leading cause of death in the United States.

Over 170 scientists around the world conducted the research. Over 190,000 participants were involved in the study, which matched coronary disease, heart disease, and cholesterol with genetic samples. The researchers found around one quarter of the genetic regions showed an association with coronary disease or heart attack along with high cholesterol – especially with the LDL “bad” cholesterol.

Around 10 percent of the genetic areas were associated with high blood pressure (hypertension). High LDL cholesterol and hypertension are risk factors related to coronary artery disease.

The scientists used previous research published in Nature Genetics last year. The previous research identified 13 new gene regions that are associated with heart disease. In the new research, scientist used last year's information and added to it.
