With an estimated 30 million cars on the road, it can be assumed the UK is a nation heavily reliant on the automobile. Indeed, stated as the EU’s third largest car market, 2.4 million new cars were registered in 2007 alone.

Although many view having a car as an essential part of daily life, ownership does not come cheap. Even after the initial outlay of buying it, there are some important financial considerations, including insurance, car tax and general maintenance.

Whilst many of the associated expenses are not open to negotiation, there are a number of things you can do to keep costs down.

Getting your car regularly serviced is fundamental. In addition to ensuring everything is working correctly, you will potentially save money in the long run, since any problems can be identified early on.

It is also sensible to carry out a set of weekly checks. This may seem like a waste of time, especially if your car is new and/or serviced regularly. However, by undertaking a few routine inspections, you can save money by addressing the small issues and also ensure your car is roadworthy. For example, checking your tyre pressure is essential. Aside from the danger aspect, under-inflated tyres will cost a lot of money in extra fuel.

Ensuring all your lights work is also vital. Not only can you fail your MOT with broken lights, but you could be stopped by the police when driving. Therefore, taking a few moments to check they all work is not a bad idea.

It might seem daunting to anyone who isn’t a mechanic, but it can pay to look under the bonnet once in a while! The three key things to investigate are windscreen wash, oil and coolant. Your owner’s manual will provide you with guidance on how to top these up. You should also have a look to ensure that all belts and hoses are in good condition.

Although there are many things you can do to maintain the health of your car, it is impossible to prevent everything. Therefore, there is a distinct likelihood that at some point or other, you will have to have work carried out on it.

The two important considerations here are finding a reliable garage and having the right car insurance. Indeed, without an adequate insurance policy, paying for things like replacement windscreens is expensive business.

You can also be left without a car whilst the work is being carried out. The right insurance however, could provide you with a courtesy car or even replace your existing one. It is therefore wise to compare the marketplace and get a range of UK car insurance quotes, to find the most cost-effective one for your needs.

With regular inspection, a bit of TLC and the right car insurance, you can make the most of your motor without stretching the budget!
