MRSA is Now Most Common Skin and Soft Tissue Infection – Change of Policy in Emergency Rooms

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), say that “MRSA is the most common cause of skin and soft-tissue infections among patients presenting in emergency rooms across the country.” This has caused a shift in the way they treat skin infections.

Since MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is resistant to all but one antibiotic used to treat skin conditions, Dr. Gregory J. Moran says "The study points to the rising prevalence of this type of MRSA and the need for clinicians to culture infections and make sure the proper antibiotic is administered to treat MRSA.” Moran is the study's principal investigator and a clinical professor of medicine in the department of emergency medicine and the division of infectious diseases at Olive View–UCLA Medical Center.

One Cup of Coffee Quadruples Risk of Heart Attack in Light Drinkers – People with Heart Disease More Susceptible Too

A cup of coffee may cause a heart attack in some people within an hour of drinking it, according to a study reported in the journal Epidemiology (“Transient Exposure to Coffee as a Trigger of a First Nonfatal Myocardial Infarction,” (Volume 17, Issue 5, September 2006.) The risk was highest among people with light or occasional coffee intake, and those with a sedentary lifestyle or other risk factors for coronary heart disease.

Sleep Apnea – Increased risk for Young Women with Asthma

Sleep Apnea – Increased risk for Young Women with Asthma

There is twice the risk to have symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea in young women suffer with asthma compared to those that don’t have asthma. Researchers from the University of Cincinnati (UC) and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) first reported this study in the August edition of the journal Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

The research team found that around 21 percent of young adult women that have asthma also routinely snored. This snoring is a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. There has been focus on how males typically have sleep apnea, but this study points out a section of women that also are at a higher risk for developing this sleep disorder.

Medicare Premiums to Remain $24 – Donut Hole is Still Problem For Some Seniors

The Bush administration announced that the average monthly premium for the Medicare Part D Drug Plan will remain about $24 per month. The cost of the program is low because Medicare pays about three quarters of the cost of drugs, while the participants pay the rest.

The premium will remain about $24 because of market competition. CMS Administrator, Mark McClellan says "Bids are down because of strong competition. If beneficiaries once again choose less costly plans, we will actually see premiums go down on average in 2007."

Study Says Some Prostate Cancers Are Over-Treated – Treatments Involved Radiation and Removal – Monitoring Low Risk Patients

Researchers in Michigan say that low-risk patients with prostate cancer may be over-treated and may do better with monitoring. In the past the recommended treatments involved removing the prostate rather than monitoring the cancer’s progress.

Since many cancers have been detected early, some doctors have been aggressively treating low-risk patients. Researchers say this may not be the best solution. New studies suggest that aggressive treatment does not improve survival benefits and may harm patients' health.
