Poorer Children at higher risk for becoming Obese

(Best Syndication News) - Researcher from Rice University found that children living in poorer neighborhoods were at almost a 30 percent higher risk for becoming obese than children who were living in high-class neighborhoods. Another factor contributing to obesity risk was lower levels of education. The study did not investigate factors such as family composition or individual features.

Rice sociologists Rachel Tolbert Kimbro, director of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research's Urban Health Program, and Justin Denney, associate director of the program, investigated data collected on 17,530 children that were age 5. These children lived in 4,700 different neighborhoods nationwide. The researchers used factors such as socioeconomic status, maternal education, and television watching time to help determine their results.

(Best Syndiaction News) - Researchers found that changing the time when mice ate caused the animals to gain weight. The study results suggest that there is a relationship between brain clock molecules and fat cell storage. The researchers published their findings in Nature Medicine.

Georgios Paschos PhD, a research associate in the lab of Garret FitzGerald, MD, FRS director of the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, along with colleagues, studied the effects of deleting the clock gene Arntl (also called Bmal1) in mice. These mice became obese when they changed the time when they normally ate at night.

Drivers with Glaucoma at an increased risk for Car Accidents

(Best Syndication News) - A study conducted in Japan found that people with glaucoma had around twice as many accidents compared to a person with normal vision when using a driving simulator. The study results were presented today at the 116th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, which this year has been joined with the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology.

Around 2.7 million Americans over the age 40 have glaucoma. Many people may not be aware that they have the disease because the vision loss is gradual and painless. Left untreated, the person can become blind. First they lose peripheral vision, but eventually the optic nerve can become damaged.

Drinking Black Tea Regularly might reduce the risk for Type 2 Diabetes

(Best Syndication News) - Researchers found that people in countries who drank black tea on a regular basis were at a reduced risk for developing type-2 diabetes. The study results were published in the online journal BMJ Open.

The researchers mined for information on black tea consumption rates in over 50 countries by using an independent market research firm to determine 2009 sales. Then they compared data from the World Health Organization (WHO) to determine the rates of respiratory, infectious, cardiovascular diseases, as well as cancer and diabetes rates.

Nestle announces recall of Nesquik Chocolate Powder Drink Mix

(Best Syndication News) - Nestlé USA announced the voluntary recall of certain packages of their Nestlé Nesquick chocolate powder drink mix. Ingredients from their supplier, Omya Inc., had calcium carbonate recalled because of possible Salmonella contamination. No illnesses have been reported in association with this recall, although the Nesquick product was distributed nationwide.

Only the powdered packages that came in the 10.9, 21.8 and 40.7 ounce canister sizes and have the “BEST BEFORE Oct 2014” are involved in the recall. The product was manufactured in early October 2012. Only the products with the matching UPC code and production codes are being recalled (see list below). All other package sizes or ones outside the Best-by date are not involved in the recall. Additionally, the ready-to-drink products are not involved in the recall.
