Better Brain Function in Elderly who ate Blueberries and Strawberries

(Best Syndication News) - A new study found elderly women who ate more blueberries and strawberries slowed their cognitive decline by up to 2.5 years. The study was published in the April 25, 2012 issue of Annals of Neurology, a journal of the American Neurological Association and Child Neurology Society.

The berries contain an antioxidant called flavonoids, which also offer anti-inflammatory properties. Previous smaller studies found eating foods high in flavonoids, particularly anthocyanidins, improved in cognitive function.

Osteoporosis rates higher with Early Menopause

(Best Syndication News) - A new study found that early menopause was associated with twice the chance of having osteoporosis later in life. The Swedish research was published in the BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

In the Swedish Malmo Perimenopausal Study, 390 white northern European women participated in the observational study starting back in 1977 when they were 48 years old. The women were categorized into one group who started menopause before 47 and the other group who started menopause at 47 or later.

Exercise 15 minutes every day to live 3 Years Longer

(Best Syndication News) - The average lifespan increases 3 years with just 15 minutes of daily exercise (or 92 minutes each week) compared to those who did not exercise, according to a study from Taiwan. The study authors said that the longevity benefit of exercise was for all ages and sexes. It was also beneficial to those with cardiovascular disease. The study was published in The Lancet.

Senior author Xifeng Wu, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Department of Epidemiology, said that exercising, even a very light amount, lowered a person’s death risk from any cause by 14 percent. Wu said that 150 minutes is the recommended weekly exercise duration, but even at 92 minutes, there are significant benefits.

Overweight Elderly had shorter Life Expectancy

(Best Syndication News) - A Loma Linda University study found that elderly people who had a higher body mass index (BMI) had a decreased life expectancy. Men older than 75 years of age, with a BMI higher than 22.3, had a reduced life expectancy by 3.7 years. Women over 75 years of age, with a BMI of 27.4 or higher had a life expectancy reduction of 2.1 years. The Adventist Health Studies' research was published in the American Geriatrics Society journal.

Lead author, Pramil N. Singh, DrPH, who is an associate professor in the School of Public Health at Loma Linda University, suggested that previous research only involved a single baseline measurement of weight, and surveyed mortality rates less than 19 years. Dr. Singh said that they had 29 years worth of follow-up data with a cohort to help measure mortality. The data included several body measurements for weight.

UV Sunscreen protection from Grape Flavonoid Polyphenolic Extracts

(Best Syndication News) - Spanish researchers found that compounds in grapes can help protect the skin from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Polyphenolic substances that come from the flavonoids found in grapes can reduce the UVA and UVB rays ability to cause damaging 'reactive oxygen species' (ROS) from developing. The study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Marta Cascante, a biochemist at the University of Barcelona (Spain) and director of the research project, said that the grape extracted compounds activated the JNK and p38 enzymes, which offered the sun protection.

Ultraviolet rays are shown to contribute to skin cancer, sunburn, and premature aging. Polyphenolic extracts could be used to make new UV sunscreen protection skin products.
