Board of Supervisors approve San Bernardino County’s Budget

(Best Syndication News) - The Board of Supervisors of San Bernardino County approved a $4.06 billion budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year this Friday. The county's fiscal year starts on July 1.

The 2012-2013 budget comes in $28.8 million less than the year before. The budget also sets aside $16.3 million for contingencies and reserves. The 2012-2013 budget also helps to avoid an anticipated $33.2 million shortfall.

Additionally, the Board of Supervisors saved $40.3 million with reductions in spending for new budget. Included in these savings are $11.8 million in cuts to department budgets, and cuts of $7.3 million in allocations to capital projects and an emergency radio system upgrade. Currently under negotiation with the labor union is $8.9 million in reductions.

San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to discuss Proposed Budget

(Best Syndication News) - The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors will be meeting on Friday to discuss the budget for Fiscal Year 2012-2013. Chair Josie Gonzales announced that the goal for tomorrow's agenda would be to close a multi-million dollar deficit.

The $4.06 billion proposed budget for 2012-2013 is anticipated to close a $33.2 million deficit.

Gonzales explained that last year the Board of Supervisors started a 5-year plan that would close the deficit. She points out that even though revenues have declined for the county, they have managed to meet their obligations while at the same time they are slowing their spending.

FAA grants Scaled Composites permit to Launch Suborbital SpaceShipTwo and WhiteKnightTwo

(Best Syndication News) - Virgin Galactic announced that their vehicle developer, Scaled Composites (Scaled), was given the OK by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to launch a suborbital spacecraft named SpaceShipTwo and the carrier aircraft named WhiteKnightTwo. Virgin Galactic is the world’s first commercial spaceline that has the goal of taking private travelers into space.

"This important milestone enables our team to progress to the rocket-powered phase of test flight, bringing us a major step closer to bringing our customers to space," said George Whitesides, president and CEO of Virgin Galactic. "We thank the FAA for their timely issuance of this permit, and for their responsible oversight of the test program."

The City of Santa Ana concerned about Typhus infection in Stray Cats

(Best Syndication News) - Concerns of a flea-born Typhus infection have spurred Santa Ana officials to trap and test stray cats near schools to prevent the spread to humans. This occurred after a Santa Ana resident tested positive for Typhus.

On Tuesday, animal service officers set traps at Frances E. Willard Intermediate School and El Sol Science and Arts Academy to catch the stray cats. The traps were provided by O.C. Vector Control and they have been out in the neighborhoods informing residents of the potential typhus problem. The city officials are testing the fleas found on the cats for typhus.

Record Number of California Public Schools in Financial Jeopardy

(Best Syndication News) - Tom Torlakson, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, announced today that 188 local educational agencies (LEAs) are in financial jeopardy. The problem involves around 2.6 million children, who attend schools throughout the state. LEAs consist of school districts, county offices of education, and joint powers agencies.

"This is the kind of record no one wants to set. Across California, parents, teachers, and administrators are increasingly wondering how to keep their schools' lights on, their bills paid, and their doors open," Torlakson said in a statement. "The deep cuts this budget crisis has forced—and the uncertainties about what lies ahead—are taking an unprecedented and unacceptable toll on our schools."
