Sovereign debt and banking concerns in Europe have put pressure on China’s manufacturing sector although growth is still continuing at a slow pace in the Asian country. The Shanghai composite index (China) and the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) index were both lower Wednesday; however the Nikkei 225 index (Japan) was higher (see the world market chart below).

World Markets

Some markets in Asia were closed on Tuesday; however the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) advanced 2.40 percent while the S&P ASX (Australia) and TSEC (Taiwan) were up 1.10 percent and 1.46 percent respectively (see world market chart below).

Markets in Asia were reeling from two days in declines throughout the world (see the world stock market chart below). Although the Shanghai composite index (China) was up slightly, the Nikkei 225 (Japan) and the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) were down 0.29 percent and 0.65 percent respectively.

World Markets

A war-of-words between the United States and Iran is sparking concerns among investors. Yesterday, an Iranian official warned Western leaders that sanctions against his country would prompt a closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for oil moving from the Persian Gulf to China and Europe.

Mixed economic news from Japan left stock markets in Asia stumbling lower (see world market chart). The Tokyo Consumer Price Index was higher than expected but household spending (YoY) was lower than expected.

The Shanghai composite index slipped 1.08 percent while the Nikkei 225 slipped 0.46 percent Tuesday.
