World Markets

Asian markets closed mostly up Wednesday (see world market chart below). The Shanghai composite index (China) slipped 1.11 percent; however the Nikkei 225 (Japan) and the Hang Seng (Hong Kong) gained 1.48 percent and 1.86 percent respectively.

Markets in Europe closed mostly lower despite some good news. The European Central Bank is offering three-year loans. Previously, the ECB has only offered one-year loans. The facility has lent almost €500 billion to banks.
