DeGeneres was only a judge for one season who replaced Paula Abdul. The reason for her exiting 'American Idol' was explained on both her Twitter account and her official website.

Turns out that DeGeneres explained on her website she didn't think being a judge for the show was 'the right fit' for her. She had told the show producers this a long time ago, but she didn't want to make it official until they found a replacement. She said that the extra work was more than what she expected and she didn't like hurting feelings of the young talent when she was judging their performances. DeGeneres said that she still is a big fan of the show and she was “grateful for the year” she had with 'American Idol.'
