A study by the University of Minnesota School of Public Health found that teenage girls that weighed themselves often were more likely to become binge eaters and also at an increased risk for developing an eating disorder and becoming obese. The study was first published in the December issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health.

The study found that these girls were not benefiting from the frequent weigh-ins on the bathroom scale. They were more likely to skip meals, smoke cigarettes, take diet pills, use laxative and vomit. These bad dieting habits could lead to eating disorders such as bulimia or anorexia. These girls were also at an increased risk for becoming obese. The study found that the girls that weighed themselves frequently gained twice as much weight compared to those girls that did not weigh-in often.

It is important for patients with type 1 diabetes to maintain their weight, according to a study by the University of Washington in Seattle. Lead author, Dr. Ian H. de Boer says “Our results suggest that weight control is important in type 1 diabetes and that overweight patients with type 1 diabetes may need further evaluation and treatment."

The researchers looked at long term data for nearly 1,300 patients to determine how obesity (specifically central obesity around the midsection) affects the risk of kidney disease. They found that the risk of microalbuminuria was significantly higher for patients with central obesity. In fact, the bigger the waistline, the higher the risk.

Dr. Oz answers questions on Oprah TV Show – You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management Book

You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management (Hardcover)
by Michael F. Roizen, Mehmet C. Oz

Dr. Mehmet Oz is co-author of the very popular book called “You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management” was on the Oprah TV show to further explain ways to improve your diet and lifestyle to lose weight and improve your health.

Dr. Oz shared with Oprah the anatomy of the human brain. Oprah held the cadaver’s human brain in her hands as he pointed out the locations of where the thoughts of food and hunger are located. The lower part of the brain decides and remembers food and not the front of the brain that governs reasoning. This is why we get cravings and hunger that can be so overpowering.

While Dr. Oz says to eat 100 calories less a day, the diet modifications in the change in your food choices will also be fewer calories. He doesn’t say it out right, but by not eating calorie dense sugary and fatty foods, and eating healthier foods will reduce your overall calorie count. You can feel full on fewer calories. Your body could eat the same volume of food and yet consume a considerably less amount of calories. If you ate 100 calories less a day, it would take over 1 month to lose a pound. If you exercised by walking 3 miles in an hour each and every day, you could burn around 2.5 pounds. That would be a total of 3.5 pounds per month. This is not that bad, but on the show he promotes losing a pants size in 10 days. This comes down to the truth, by eating healthier foods; you are eating less calorie dense foods and eating less calories. The benefits from eating more fruits and vegetables and less cookies and cakes is that you will eat less calories and you can feel fuller doing it.
