Significant height loss may be an indicator of heart disease and early death, according to researchers in the United Kingdom. Both men and women naturally become shorter due to bone, muscles and joints, and a small height loss is OK. But a significant height loss of three or more centimeters over a lifetime may be a sign of osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) or other ailments.

Considerable loss could affect breathing and digestive functions, leading to poor eating habits and weight loss, and may be associated with sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass. They found that men who lose 3 centimeters or more of height as they age have an increased risk of death and of coronary heart diseases events.

University of Michigan researchers say they are getting closer to developing or growing bioengineered heart muscle, or BEHM, with organized cells, capable of generating pulsating forces and reacting to stimulation more like real muscle than ever before. The technique could be used to create replacement parts for the human heart.

In fact, the report in the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A, suggests that they may eventually be able to grow an entirely new heart from just a “spoonful of loose heart cells”. They used a new technique that grows “three-dimensional” tissue faster than before, and still yields tissue with “significantly better properties.”

The U-M is applying for patent protection on the development and is actively looking for a corporate partner to help bring the technology to market. Ravi K. Birla, Ph.D. says “Many different approaches to growing heart muscle tissue from cells are being tried around the world, and we’re pursuing several avenues in our laboratory. But from these results we can say that utilizing a fibrin hydrogel yields a product that is ready within a few days, that spontaneously organizes and begins to contract with a significant and measurable force, and that responds appropriately to external factors such as calcium.” Birla is the lead researcher.

Master Cardiac Stem Cell Found That Could Form Both Muscle And Endothelial Lineages – Possible Treatment Or Cure Heart Attacks

Dr Kenneth R. Chien

Researchers have identified what they are calling a “Master Cardiac Stem Cells” which is capable of differentiating into the three major types of cells that make up the mammalian heart. In a study that will appear in the December 15th issue of the journal Cell, scientists at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cardiovascular Research Center say that they have identified progenitor cells in mice.

They were able to clone single cells from embryonic stem cells, and showing that these cloned cells can differentiate into cardiac muscle, smooth muscle or endothelial cells. Dr Kenneth R. Chien says "These cells offer new prospects for drug discovery and genetically based models of human disease.” Chien is director of the MGH Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC) and senior author of the Cell paper.

Can Dark Chocolate really work on lowering Blood Pressure Levels?

Can Dark Chocolate really work on lowering Blood Pressure Levels?

Leonidas Belgian Chocolates: 1 lb Dark Chocolates Assortment

Although this may seem like a joke to many, a study has been carried out in the US and published in the Journal of the American Heart Association regarding lowering your blood pressure levels by eating dark chocolate. It has been found that one bar of dark chocolate is more than enough to lower a persons blood pressure in a natural and enjoyable way and it also been found that it helps to improve the bodies insulin resistance.

It has already been discovered that foods which are rich in flavinols are great for lowering blood pressure. Flavinols are known in the medical fields as a natural antioxidant and things that we already consume containing these antioxidants are tea and red wine and from now dark chocolate can be added to the list.

It may be a fairly uncommon disease but emphysema is one of the most common reasons for the increasing number of death rates. It is a pulmonary disease which damages your lungs due to the toxic air we breathe. Some of the common chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases are bronchitis, asthma and emphysema. This condition takes place when the lung tissue loses it elasticity and finds it hard to maintain a normal breathing pattern. Many suffer through this disease and have lost their lives in this battle. Smoking is one of the common causes for this condition. The changing environmental conditions with increasing pollution and passive smokers fall victim to such condition.
