A study from the University of Alberta concludes that walking is not enough to achieve important health benefits gained from exercising. This study was first presented at the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual conference.

"Generally, low-intensity activity such as walking alone is not likely going to give anybody marked health benefits compared to programs that occasionally elevate the intensity," said Dr. Vicki Harber, lead author on the Health First study.

The researchers thought that walking in itself was not enough for people and just increasing volumes of time may not be the most beneficial. A current recommendation is to use a pedometer to measure 10,000 steps each day. It encourages people to get moving.

New Drug Resistant TB Has Spread – All Regions of World Affected By New Strain - AIDS Has Potential to Fast Track XDR-TB

New Drug Resistant TB Has Spread – All Regions of World Affected By New Strain - AIDS Has Potential to Fast Track XDR-TB

It is feared that an extremely dangerous and drug resistant strain of tuberculosis (TB) has spread across the border from South Africa into other countries. There were victims “all over the place… you can almost be sure there will be infection in Mozambique and even farther [abroad] because people travel”, according to Willem Sturm in a report from the Tribune News Service.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern about the emergence of this virulent strain. In a press release they say the strain is virtually untreatable with existing drugs and they have called for the strengthening of prevention measures.

Boston Scientific and Guidant Off to Texas Slaughterhouse

The first, but by no means the last, Guidant trial is scheduled to begin on September 18, 2006, in Neuces County District Court in Corpus Christi, Texas before Judge Jack Hunter.

The two plaintiffs, Louis Motal, 63, and Bernice Hinojosa, 65, are surviving patients implanted with Guidant's Ventak Prizm 2 defibrillators in 2001. The lawsuit claims that Guidant "actively concealed the ... defect, suppressed reports, failed to follow through on FDA notification requirements, and failed to disclose a known defect to patients."

Drug Coated Stent More Likely To Cause Blood Clots – Plain Metal Stents More Likely to Develop Muscle Tissue

New research shows that drug-coated cardiac stents produce a higher risk of blood clots when compared to non-drug coated stents. Stents are metal mesh tubes used to prop open coronary arteries.

According to a Swiss-Dutch study, patients who receive drug-coated stents were at an increased risk of thrombosis, or blood clots. These clots can occasionally result in death. The dangers of the newer drug-coated stents were released Sunday at the World Cardiology Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

High Blood Pressure can be lowered by taking Multiple Short Walks Each Day

High Blood Pressure can be lowered by taking Multiple Short Walks Each Day

According to Indiana University researchers, taking three or four short vigorous walks spread out during each day is more helpful than completing the same amount of exercise in one lump of time. The study was first reported in the September issue of the Journal of Hypertension.

"The biggest problem for most people is they don't have the time," said Janet P. Wallace, professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. "You might think, 'I don't have the time to go to the gym or work out for 40 minutes, but I might have the time to do 10 minutes here, 10 minutes here and another 10 minutes here.' Four 10-minute walks would be ideal."
