Trip To Iqaluit In Nunavut, A Canadian Arctic City

Trip To Iqaluit In Nunavut, A Canadian Arctic City

In 2004, I completed two Inuit art buying trips to Iqaluit (formerly Frobisher Bay), the capital of Nunavut, Canada's newest territory. For both trips, I flew out of Ottawa on Canadian North airlines. The other airline that services Nunavut is First Air. Only the last half of the jets was allocated for passengers as the entire first half was for cargo.

Being so remote, Canadian Arctic Inuit communities pretty well have to have everything shipped up there by plane or by boat during the summers since there are no roads connecting to the rest of Canada or even between each Nunavut community. The Arctic landscape from the air was desolate, hilly and barren. As the plane got closer to Iqaluit, the airport's small terminal building stood out with its bright yellow color. The airport itself is within walking distance to the rest of the town. There are taxis that charge a flat rate of $5 per trip anywhere in Iqaluit.

If you looked on the various news headlines emerging from the Middle East, you will notice a substantial shift taking place in the manner they have been reporting about this region as a whole. From various military coups to the stories of political vendetta; from gun totting hostage takers to the unnerving interpretation of Islam; and from the so-called lack of democratization to the non existent human rights, the Middle East has always had to bear the brunt of hostile news reporting. But, the emerging trade and commerce and tourism activities in Dubai are fundamentally changing this long held stereotyped interpretation of the Muslim world now.

Don't be surprised therefore, if the British footballer David Beckham and the Spice Girl Victoria are seen walking out of one of its famous five star hotels, or if the reigning formula one champion Michael Schumacher is spotted unwinding somewhere on its breathtaking shorelines. You will also come to notice some very famous names from the corporate world making regular rounds of this famous city. From top cine stars to sports celebrities and from the multi-billion empire holders to the average holiday making freaks, all are increasingly being seen on Dubai's soil these days. This in itself, speaks a lot of how dramatically the world's vision of the Middle East has transformed.

Island Vacation At Florida Keys

Florida Keys offer some of the most wonderful vacation stops in the world. This is the long stretch of land south of the mainland. It is comprised of five groups of islands known as Key Largo, Marathona, Lower Keys, Key West, and Islamorada.

The first area you reach is Key Largo. This is not very far from Miami, about one hundred and sixty miles. At once, you notice the change in atmosphere from the hustle and bustle of a city to a more laid back air.

People may think that places like Hawaii or Bahamas are the ultimate destinations for vacations but that is not true. In the Florida Keys you can do and see whatever you want. There are isolated beaches for those who want a more private time alone, in the form of Islamorada or Marathon Island and there is an active night life for the more socially inclined.

Why is Dubai dotted with so many hotels which include a staggering number of five-star and the world's only existing seven-star on its soil? Any visiting traveler normally wonders while looking at the perplexing skyline Dubai has been able to garner. Even people from the western countries would stop to say a few words of acknowledgment on the vast infrastructure Dubai has been able to cultivate and continues to get its dividends from. But, wasn't this a piece of arid land only some 150 odd years ago, one normally wonders while walking across Dubai's lush alleys. It may sound however weird, but that's what Dubai's history seems to indicate about its recent past.

Travel can be a lot of fun, but it takes some advance planning. People with diabetes have to plan a little more. Here are a few things to keep in mind about your insulin when you head out for that dream vacation.

Your Blood Sugar

When you are traveling, it is important to monitor your blood sugar more closely. This means checking your blood sugar every four hours when you are awake. Travel can be stressful, which can raise your blood sugar level. Don’t treat your blood sugar without monitoring it, and monitor it to make sure that you are giving the correct dosages of medication and/or insulin.

Insulin Storage

Keep your insulin with you when you travel, in your carry-on or purse. Insulin needs to stay in a fairly moderate temperature zone, and as such, cannot go with your luggage in the depressurized compartment. Also, if there were ever a baggage handling mishap, you would want your insulin to be with you: if your bags end up in Minneapolis-St. Paul’s when you are in Sao Paulo, you want to make sure you have your insulin.
