Oldest and Thickest Arctic Ice Caps are Disappearing Faster than Thinner Younger Ice

(Best Syndication News) - The oldest and thickest parts of the Arctic Sea ice caps are disappearing faster than the younger thinner ice concluded a NASA study. The study found that multi-year ice covers around 15 percent of the ocean surface and is retreating at a rate of 15.1 percent every 10 years. The study was published in the recent issue of the Journal of Climate.

Joey Comiso, senior scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md., and author of the study, said that the surface temperature in the Arctic is increasing. This warming trend shortens the time for ice to form. To reverse the trend of shrinking ice coverage, there would need to be a persistent cold spell in these areas to get the ice to get thicker in the winter in order to prevent summer melting.

Electric Vehicle Audi A3 e-tron Pilot Program announced in Four US Cities

(Best Syndication News) - A new Audi A3 e-tron pilot program will be launched in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and Denver markets. The announcement was made by Audi at the TED2012 conference that is going on in Long Beach, California this week.

The automaker will be investigating real world driving scenarios using the A3 e-tron electric vehicles. By driving in urban environments they can measure how well the e-tron technology functions. Audi engineering teams in the US and in Germany will analyze the yearlong pilot program.

The US Postal Service is going Green and Saving Money

(Best Syndication News) - The US Postal Service (USPS) has been struggling with making ends meet. One way that the USPS has been saving money is by going green. The government agency estimates it has saved over $34 million and also created $24 million in revenue by reducing petroleum fuel, consumables, water and energy usage. They also have reduced the amount of solid waste that was sent to landfills.

To further promote their environmental message, they have created the “Go Green Forever” stamps that offer the reduce, reuse and recycle messages.

Nationwide, the USPS has 400 lean green teams that have the motto “leaner, greener, faster, smarter” message. These teams were tasked with the job of finding ways to put into action low or no-cost sustainable practices at their facilities by 2015.

Research Helps Illuminate the Evolution of Supermassive Black Holes

(Best Syndication News) Using the Hubble Space Telescope, researchers from the United Kingdom and Australia are learning more about the creation of supermassive black holes.

The research, which is published in the Astrophysical Journal, provides some new insight into how extremely large black holes, which are found in the center of large galaxies, are formed.

Back in 2009, Sean Farrell of the Sydney Institute for Astronomy in Australia and the University of Leicester, UK, discovered a “middleweight” black hole in 2009 using the European Space Agency’s XMM-Newton X-ray space telescope. Using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, Farrell and his team are now able to get a better and more comprehensive view of the galaxy called ESO 243-49.

Summers in US are hitting Extreme Temperature More Often

(Best Syndication News) - Extreme temperatures are occuring more often than before, according to research at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

The lead researcher, Phil Duffy, and his colleagues analyzed summer temperature history data dating back to 1950 in the lower 48 contiguous states. They found that the extreme temperatures have occurred more often in the latter years. Based on this data, the researchers created a climate model projecting potential temperatures through 2064.

Duffy suggests that increasing greenhouse gas concentrations may be the cause of the increased extreme summer temperatures. “It is extremely unlikely that the observed increase has happened through chance alone,” Duffy said.
