[Best Syndication] A cooperative effort with OpenOffice.org will help IBM develop their Lotus Notes product by making code contributions to this open source project.

Lotus Symphony will be based on the openoffice.org program. This office suite will be made available for free to download software. The software will allow the creation of documents and sharing along with a spreadsheet program and a presentation software.

IBM’s Lotus Symphony is using many of the same tools that are in the recently released Lotus Notes 8. This can be advantageous for businesses as well as schools. This is a cost effective solution that will be a boon to help business overcome the expensive software suite licensing issues.

Google Consumer Rating Slips But Still Superior Alternative To Yahoo Or Microsoft – Gmail and Personalized Home Pages

Personalized Google Homepage

(Best Syndication) Google’s rating from the University of Michigan's American Customer Satisfaction Index fell slightly compared to Yahoo, but this could be because consumers have not become aware of the new technologies offered by the company. Google has updated their customizable home page and has made strides in providing a more “universal search” that includes video, news and web pages.

Most consumers turn to Google for their superior search, but Google also provides a personalized customizable homepage, with more news sources and widgets than Yahoo. Google provides an assortment of fun personalized themes on their homepage, plus customizable tabs. Of course Yahoo offers some customizable features but they also force you to view advertising on their page. There are no ads on Google’s personalized pages.

The good news is that you don’t have to be a slave to Microsoft’s word processor. And if you only have need for a word processor to type up a letter once in a while, a free one would be the best.

Google decided to work with Sun’s StarOffice over OpenOffice for the bundling deal that will last for almost two years.

Wales

(Best Syndication) Have you ever heard of a Wikipedia open source search? That is the plans laid out by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, who expects the search engine to be operational by the end of the year.

Wikipedia already appears near the top of many searcher results and has been hugely successful as an online encyclopedia. The advertising-free collaborative effort has proven to be accurate as compared to Encyclopedia Britannica. But how will a new search be able to compete against search and advertising giants like Google, Yahoo and Microsoft?

Wales says he wants to provide relevant searchers without excessive "spam and useless crap." Like other open source developments, Wales says the inner workings of the search engine will be transparent.
