Life before Television - Creating Your Imagery Again

Life before Television - Creating Your Imagery Again

Having a love-hate relationship with your TV? Tell me about it. Can't live with it--can't live without it, right? When my son was about age nine, he shared an experience he had while reading. He told me about reading something and, "... it was almost like being there". He's since become an avid reader which has helped him in all areas of study. A real parent's dream.

So what does this have to do with TV? I know, I know, this topic has been beaten to death; we watch too much television, it rules our lives and it's overloaded with sex, violence and materialism. Everyone's heard this all before; how the television replaced the family hearth, etc., etc.

Enzyme Found Can Reverse Alzheimer’s Disease and Restore Memory in Mice

Researchers from New York say that they have discovered an enzyme that thwarts some of the memory problems associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The enzyme, called Uch-L1 is found in lower amounts in Alzheimer’s patients.

Dr. Bing Gong and colleagues at Columbia University say that tests on shows promise. They injected the enzyme into the mice and found the mice developed new memories.

Sleep Apnea – Children with untreated Severe OSA have Lower IQ

Johns Hopkins researchers have showed children’s brains with untreated sleep apnea to damage two parts of the brain that are linked to learning abilities. The study was first published in the online August 22nd edition of the journal, Public Library of Science Medicine.

The researchers used MRI technology to look at the brain activity of 19 children that had severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). They also measured the brain activity of 12 children that did not have any problems with breathing while they sleep. The two locations that were measured with the MRI were the hippocampus and the right frontal cortex.

Autism – Researchers find a link with abnormal Blood-Vessel Damage and Oxidative Stress

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have found children with autism have differences with abnormal blood-vessel function and damaging levels of oxidative stress compared with healthy children. Lead author, Domenico Pratico, MD, Associate Professor of Pharmacology along with colleagues, first published their findings in the August issue of the Archives of Neurology.

The children with autism presented with certain levels of biochemical differences that suggest the incidence of constricted blood vessels by way of the endothelium. These differences in the cells that line the blood vessels create a higher chance for the formation of clots.

Alzheimer’s disease – Painless Skin Test for Early Detection

Alzheimer’s disease – Painless Skin Test for Early Detection

Scientists from the Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute (BRNI) have found a substance in skin cells that could help diagnose whether or not a person is developing early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The skin test could be completed at a doctor’s office by a nurse or in an outpatient clinic. The researchers first published their report in the August 14th online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

The BRNI biomarker found in the skin sample can accurately determine if a person has Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia during the first one to two years of the early progression of the disease.
