Scientists suggest RDA of Vitamin C should be doubled to Reduce Disease Risk

(Best Syndication News) - The US recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin C should be increased to 200 milligrams per day for adults, scientists from the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University suggests. The current RDA for vitamin C for women is 75 milligrams and 90 milligrams for men. The scientists from the institute put forward that an increase in the RDA could reduce heart disease, stroke, and cancer. The call for the higher intake of vitamin C was published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition.

Balz Frei, a professor and director of the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, said that some clinical trials were essentially imperfect. Of course, the Linus Pauling Institute has long been recommending vitamin C for improving health.

Taking Vitamin D plus Calcium together might make you Live Longer

(Best Syndication News) - A new study found that vitamin D when taken along with calcium reduced the death rate for the elderly. The study was published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM).

Researchers assigned elderly participants either to take just a vitamin D supplement or to take a vitamin D along with a calcium supplement. The data came from 1,000 participants over eight randomized controlled trials. The majority of participants, 90 percent, were women with a median age of 70. Over a three-year time, those taking vitamin D along with calcium had a reduced death rate by 9 percent.

CDC reports that Higher Education reduces Obesity Rates for Women and Children

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released their 35th annual Health, United States, 2011 report. They found that people with higher education levels had lower rates of obesity in women and children than those with the least education and lowest income levels.

The study found that the households with the higher levels of education between 2007-2010 had lower rates of obesity in girls and boys between 2 and 19 years old. If the head of the household had less than a high school education the obesity level in their children averaged 24 percent in boys and 22 percent in girls. The obesity rate drops dramatically when the head of the household had a bachelor’s degree or higher – the obesity rate was 11 percent for boys and 7 percent for females.

Low Oxygen in Cells might spur Cancer Growth

(Best Syndication News) - The tumor growth rate of certain cancers could be increased with low oxygen levels, according to recent study from researchers at the University of Georgia. The study was published in the early online edition of the Journal of Molecular Cell Biology.

The current consensus of most researchers is that genetic mutation is the main cause of cancer growth. This study suggests another cause: low oxygen levels (hypoxia) in cells. Oxygen may play a role in unruly tumor growth in certain types of cancer. Prior research showed that low oxygen levels were a contributing factor to cause cancer to advance, however, they did not point to it as the main cause.

Better Brain Function in Elderly who ate Blueberries and Strawberries

(Best Syndication News) - A new study found elderly women who ate more blueberries and strawberries slowed their cognitive decline by up to 2.5 years. The study was published in the April 25, 2012 issue of Annals of Neurology, a journal of the American Neurological Association and Child Neurology Society.

The berries contain an antioxidant called flavonoids, which also offer anti-inflammatory properties. Previous smaller studies found eating foods high in flavonoids, particularly anthocyanidins, improved in cognitive function.
