vitamins - BSN

(Best Syndication News) - Some women that were at high risk for developing melanoma had reduced their risk for developing the deadly skin cancer by taking calcium and Vitamin D supplements. The supplements did not benefit all women at reducing the melanoma cancer risk. The study was conducted at the Stanford University School of Medicine and will be published in the online June 27 edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

The researchers from Stanford used data from a large clinical trial to find women with a history of non-melanoma skin cancer. The researchers said that the non-fatal skin cancers give a person a higher chance to develop melanoma later on. The data showed women who were once treated for a non-melanoma skin cancer and took calcium combined with vitamin D, had 57 percent fewer melanoma diagnosis compared to women with similar skin cancers who did not take the supplements. The non-melanoma skin cancers included basal cell and squamous cell cancers.

Birth Control Pills with Drospirenone could have increased risk for blood clots says FDA

prescription medication - BSN

(Best Syndication News) - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a safety alert for birth control pills that contain drospirenone because of a possible increased risk for serious blood clots. Brand name birth controls Yaz (generic version Gianvi and Loryna), Yasmin (generic version Ocella, Syeda, and Zarah), Beyaz, and Safyral all contain drospirenone.

Two recently published studies saw an increased risk for venous thromboembolism with women taking drospirenone birth control pills compared to women taking levonorgestrel containing birth control pills. These studies said the risk was between two and three times higher for developing venous thromboembolism with the drospirenone birth control pill taking group compared to the levonorgestrel birth control pill group. However, the FDA said that other studies did not report this increased risk and the government agency will continue to determine if the risk valid. As the FDA continues to investigate, they will share this any updated information they have acquired on any potential dangers with these birth control pills containing drospirenone.
