(Best Syndication) The U.S. Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged 14 defendants from UBS Securities LLC and Morgan Stanley & Co for an insider trading scheme that allegedly netted more than $15 million in illegal insider trading profits on thousands of trades. The SEC alleges that the ring used stolen information from the firms.

The watch-dog agency is taking aim at hedge funds. SEC Chairman Christopher Cox said "Our action today is one of several that will make very clear the SEC is targeting hedge fund insider trading as a top priority."

(Best Syndication) Dell reported that they will not be paying out full employee bonuses “due to a failure to achieve its operating targets for fiscal 2007”. Their preliminary results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2007 were an operating income of $801 million on revenue of $14.4 billion. They ended the quarter with $12.5 billion in cash and investments, according to the company.

This equates to 30 cents per share. CNN Money reports that the No. 2 PC maker's sales figures came in below estimates, and Dell warned that growth and profit margins will remain "under pressure" for the next few quarters.

Fed Chief Ben Bernanke Speaks To Congress Committee Wednesday – Interest Rates Could Still Be Raised

Bernanke

(Best Syndication) Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke, was in front of the House Budget Committee on Wednesday, one day after Tuesday’s 3 percent market drop on the New York Stock Exchange. The chief did not seem fazed by the decline in the market operations saying that "They seem to be working well, normally."

Bernanke said that he did not see any single cause for Tuesday’s sell-off. It may have had less to do with former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan’s remarks over the weekend than the Market slump in China on rumors of government measures to cool the sizzling Chinese economy. Greenspan had said that the U.S. economy may be headed for a recession.

Rats in Taco Bell

(Best Syndication) It wasn’t long ago that Taco Bell was shamed with an e-coli outbreak, and now the company is being embarrassed again with images of rats running through their restaurant. New Yorkers know that rats abound in restaurants, hotels and apartments, but they rarely see them.

The Consumer Affairs website reports that a news crew took pictures of the rodents in a KFC and Taco Bell store in Manhattan's trendy Greenwich Village. The footage aired on local New York City television stations, and prompted a series of inspections, according to the report. The store closed Friday.

Successful investors can predict where the market is going years before the rest of us. Like the clichés of selling ice to Eskimos (or the British version of selling coal to Newcastle), Richmond, Virginia-based Coal Baron E. Morgan Massey was five years ahead of the markets when he raised $75 million to develop coal mines in China’s Shanxi province in 2001.

As early as 1994, the seventies-something founder and chairman of A.T. Massey Coal, which has since evolved into Massey Energy (MEE), began planning to bring American-invented Longwall mining technology to China’s coal mines in Shanxi province. With his Chinese partners, Massey and Asian American Coal control about two billion tons of coal reserves.

It is Massey’s spin off coalbed methane (CBM) company Asian American Gas, which caught our eye. According to Shanxi News, the CBM output of a pilot well set a new national record, continuously producing 40,000 SCM per day (standard cubic meters). The new technology which created the new national record is something called “Multi-Lateral Drilling (MLD).”
